Thanks to WALMART for our P. E. Grant!!!

Walmart has chosen the Myrtle Grove Elementary Physical Education Program for a $250.00 grant to go toward combating obesity and developing healthy lifestyles.

Rules and Safety covered in first week.

School rules and playground safety are introduced and reviewed with all Myrtle Grove students the first week of the school year. Students are taught the three basic rules of Myrtle Grove School...Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe. They are also instructed in the procedures necessary for participating safely in P. E. and recess activities.

Aerobic Fitness - Heart and Lungs at work

Our Aerobic Fitness Unit covers the functions of the heart, lungs and vascular system and how they work together. Students are taught the importance of aerobic exercise and participate in such aerobic activities as step aerobics and exercise machine workouts.

Muscular Strength and Endurance

Muscles are the topic of our Strength and Endurance unit. Students learn that muscles work with the bones to protect, support and move the body. Students are also made aware of the importance of strength training. Weight lifting and wall climbing are examples of the activities our students participate in during this unit.

Fore! Students take a whack at Golf.

In this unit Myrtle Grove students learn the basics of the game of golf and golf etiquette. They also practice golf skills on the playground and in the P. E. classroom using special clubs and the Wii Sports system.

Throwing, Rolling and Bowling

Students get a chance to throw things at one another in this unit. Proper technique in these skills are taught and practiced. The students learn the difference between underhanded, overhanded and backhanded throws along with the importance of throwing with opposition, aiming and using appropriate force. Students throw footballs, soccer balls, tennis balls and basketballs and learn to use throwing equipment including lacrosse stix, jai alai scoops and frisbees. We also turn our indoor facility into a bowling alley with real and virtual bowling.

Alive and Kickin'

Next up is our kicking unit in which students learn the fundamentals of place kicking and punting. They also work on these skills by place kicking and punting soccer balls and footballs. This unit leads us into our soccer unit where students participate in modified soccer game play.

Line Em' Up!

Line Soccer is Myrtle Grove's version of a regulation Soccer game. Students take turns playing a small sided customized game. Our focus is on Team Work, Sportsmanship and Learning the Rules of Soccer.

Tennis Anyone?

Students come out swinging in this unit. Thanks to the USTA we have enough racquets, tennis balls and nets for every student to participate!

Tennis Skills - Indoors and Out

We take advantage of our indoor and outdoor facilities to teach our students the rules and skills necessary to play tennis.

UFOs at the Grove!

Actually those flying discs are being thrown by Myrtle Grove Students. This unit teaches students the rules and skills necessary to play the lifetime sport of Disc Golf. Through Power Point presentations students learn the rules and etiquette of the game. Outdoors the students practice their shots with regulation discs and goals.

Nutrition, Keep Your Balance!

Throughout the year we present our students with information regarding food choices, portion sizes and the importance of balancing calorie intake with exercise.

Nutrition - Hand In Hand - Exercise

The Myrtle Grove Jog Club is one way we reinforce the link between Exercise and Weight Control. Throughout the year students have the opportunity to accumulate milage by walking, jogging and running and earn ribbons based on their milage. They also learn about pace, endurance and long term goal setting.

We Teach Our Students To Be Better Movers!

Our Agility training is addressed through the teaching of the concepts of movement patterns, pace variance and balance. Students gain knowledge of these skills through Power Point presentations, lecture, group discussion and skills practice. Our obstacle course is a school wide favorite!

Juggling

Another type of movement we address is Coordination. Many of the Sports Skills we teach have coordination components but the activity which best addresses this area is Juggling. We teach group, partner and individual juggling. And it's pretty cool!          It's all about the pattern.

Stop, Look and Listen

Our Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Unit is designed in cooperation with the school district to teach our kids how to be safe on the roadways!

We include bus safety skills as part of our Safety on Streets Unit.

Track and Field

This unit is for our 4th and 5th Graders and designed to prepare them for Middle and High School programs and competition. Students are introduced to all track and field events and practice the Field Events of  Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus. They also practice the Track events of Distance Running, Sprinting, Relays and Hurdles.

Dribble, Pass and Shoot!

Sports skills are an important part of the Myrtle Grove P. E. Program. In this unit we learn and practice Basketball skills.

As part of our focus on sports skills we learn and practice the fundamentals of Volleyball.
